O'Neil was a participant in O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when she was in high school. She was able to advance into the top 100 because of the judges' enthusiasm about her performance. O'Neil did not make it to the top 3 after a series of consistently outstanding performances. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil had defeated Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the Idol history. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
